Why is there a D in fridge...

but not in refrigerator?

You’ve probably written both words hundreds of times without ever questioning it.

And now?

You can't unsee it. 👀

The answer is surprisingly simple: “fridge” came from “refrigerator,” but when the shortened spelling developed, the D was added to preserve the soft “j” sound. Without it, frige could look like it should rhyme with oblige or be pronounced differently.

So no, the D didn't escape from refrigerator.

We put it there ourselves.

Which raises another question...

How many other completely normal words are hiding something weird in plain sight? 🧠
